Women can spend a lot of time on the daily topic of “getting dressed”. Our wardrobes are often overflowing, so in the morning we go through a selection of jeans and check if they still fit, if they are completely clean and what we could pair with them. Shopping is also not possible. Here it costs not only time, but also money. It’s better that way. With these tips you can keep track of your wardrobe and organize the boring topic of “clothes” to save time and money.
Organize your wardrobe
If you haven’t checked what’s hanging on the clothes rail, in the drawers or stacked on the shelves for a long time, your closet is probably full. Everything is close and confusing. In reality, we all have too many dresses and not all of them have been a real success. So it’s better to have an overview and only keep what has passed this check:
- What is still good or can be improved if necessary? Frayed seams or missing buttons don’t have to be the end of a favorite piece. Baggy shirts, frayed jeans or hopelessly stained skirts must go.
- What suits you (yet)? In your well-stocked wardrobe there should only be items that are truly comfortable to wear. So get rid of the jeans that are too tight and the jacket that’s too small. Experience shows that they will never be used again. Or they are hopelessly out of date if you actually change your figure significantly.
- What have you never worn or only worn once because it turned out to be a bad buy? Wrong color, wrong fit or just no reason for the smart suit, motto t-shirt? Then get rid of it.
- What comes from a time when you preferred a completely different style? It’s best to say goodbye to clothes that no longer fit you and your personality.
- And finally: how many black t-shirts, white shirts, blue cardigans do you really need? We all have a weakness (I could never have enough jeans…), but the wardrobe practically fills up. So it’s best to get rid of what you have in excess. 2-3 copies of the same type are sufficient.
You’ve now narrowed your inventory down to the items you’ll actually wear. And your closet is much clearer. If you’re serious about decluttering, maybe read Marie Kondō’s book (Magical Cleaning: How Proper Tidying Changes Your Life.) or watch a video about her KonMari method.
A breath of fresh air for old favourites
Fewer clothes doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t always show them off again. Your imagination is needed here. Those who still know Coco Chanel and the little black dress know what women did with a single dress to make it individual every day. Scarves, necklaces, jackets, belts, scarves: accessories change the tried-and-tested basics quickly and according to your mood and revive old favorites again.
A well-thought-out wardrobe made up of just a few items doesn’t have to be boring: Susanne Ackstaller (aka Texterella) also explores the topic and shows what you can do with an old item of clothing that you’ve grown fond of. This is sustainable because fewer new things are purchased and therefore no resources are used. More tips on this trend can be found here.
Buy strategically
Shopping for clothes can be fun, but regrets quickly come when the loot from this raid doesn’t live up to its promise. So don’t waste your precious time and money, but plan your purchases strategically. The best of capsule wardrobe style. This is not boring. Well planned, there are always many possible combinations of basic pieces and accessories to show you how you feel in the moment.
Invest in your clothes
Buy valuable. Just your basics. For me that means jeans and a pantsuit, but also a linen shirt (instead of a blazer for summer) and shoes. It does not have to be a designer piece, but it must be of good quality, durable with a perfect cut and material. And please don’t compromise on fit. If the new item is purchased on the basis of “profit”, as in the case of children’s clothes (i.e. when I lost 4 kg), it will definitely mold in the wardrobe. So buy only perfect items, otherwise you won’t wear others later.
Buy sustainably. Check out portals like Vinted (formerly Kleiderkreisel) or momox fashion. There you will find used parts, often from your favorite brands, in good condition. Not only are they much cheaper than new ones from the store, but you’re also doing something good for the environment because you’re reusing something that’s no longer needed. Instead of buying something new. Ok, you might need some time to search here because not everything is available in your size or color, but it’s worth it.
Extra tips for every day
If you’re not sure about tidying up your closet and prefer to approach clearing out with caution: hang all items on the clothes rail with the hook facing forward. Everything you wear once is put back on backwards. This way, after a while, you’ll have an overview of which things you actually wear and which are just slow-moving items that you can put away without regret.
Please place only clean, undamaged and wearable clothing in the wardrobe. Anything that needs to be washed, cleaned, aired or repaired should not be there. This way you will avoid unpleasant surprises if the only white blouse you absolutely need today for the client appointment has not been freshly washed and ironed.
You may also know the joke about the Bundeswehr soldier who stands in front of his locker in his uniform in the morning and sighs: «I have nothing to wear!» So if you want to avoid stress in front of the wardrobe: prepare the clothes for tomorrow tonight. Then you can start the next day completely relaxed.
